La Virgen

As you know, David has been working the night shift…leaving at 11:00 AM and getting home at 1:00 AM. Yesterday, we were sitting in the lobby of the hotel waiting for a ride. I happened to see the lady, in the picture, walk by. She was carrying what appeared to be a clay bird statue and carrying items on her back wrapped in a blanket. She walked to the art gallery across from the hotel and rang the bell to go inside. I just discovered the other day that the walled compound that my sixth story hotel room looks down on, is indeed, an art gallery.

So, she stood there for quite awhile and no one answered the door. I was curious and went over to talk with her. Well, she had made the items. They were our of a terracotta type pottery. The bird like item was a candle holder. It held 3 candles in the larger one and 2 candles in the smaller one. She also had a duck type vessel that you could pour a liquid into and then serve it by having the liquid pour out of the beak. I decided to buy the statue of the Virgin.

Now, if I saw this Virgin in the store, I probably wouldn’t buy it. However, this piece of pottery now has such a great story…did I mention that she had traveled eight hours to get to Lima? She charged me $6.00 and I gave her another $3.00 for taking her picture. I am curious to see what my little statue goes for in one of the gift shops here in Lima.

I can’t wait for my shelves to be built in the living and dining room. I have some great memories to put on them!
